Shrewsbury Town shot-stoppers are constantly learning
Craig MacGillivray has revealed he and counterpart Dean Henderson are constantly learning at Shrewsbury Town.
Both shot-stoppers arrived at Montgomery Waters Meadow this summer as MacGillivray checked in on a free transfer from rivals Walsall and Henderson came on-loan from Manchester United.
With talented youngster Henderson – boss Paul Hurst's No.1 so far this term – away on international duty with England's under-21s, MacGillivray has his shot between the sticks at Gillingham today.
Both goalkeepers have vastly different career paths. MacGillivray, 24, was at non-league Harrogate Town before Walsall, while Henderson came through the Carlisle and Old Trafford academies – but both are learning on the job.
“It was interesting, when we first met. We didn’t really know a lot about each other. We were having dinner at Nando's," said MacGillivray.
“He was asking about where I’d come from and saying how it was the completely opposite to him. We were bouncing off each other.
"I think it works, we both have different ideas, it’s good to learn off each other.
"It's nice to also know how all the academies all work, how they get treated and who he's learned from."
MacGillivray was also tasked at getting the inside track on the goings on at Jose Mourinho's United. He added:"My family all follow United, so that was one of the things, finding out what it's like there, what the players are like.
"There's all this hype around how players are in the press but when you actually have someone that's come there and been around them - you get a sense of what it's really like there."
The Yorkshire-born glovesman revealed a different way of perfecting his craft than his No.1 rival for this term.
"I'm learning of him," he said. "Everybody probably thinks 'oh he's younger' but he's had professional coaching all of his life.
"Whereas I set up a camera in my back garden and videoed myself doing certain things, then watching it and tweaking it."
