Hurst told his squad yesterday the team that will start the League One season at home to Northampton tomorrow and admitted there was disappointment for the players left out.

The Shrewsbury chief was eager to give himself more of a selection headache after not nearly enough competition in the squad he adopted last season.

He added the importance of a squad game, and that everyone will be given a chance.

“I understand disappointment from certain players,” said Hurst.

“I accept it, but ultimately it is a long, hard season. I expect all of them, with the exception of the younger pros, to have their moments. That might be a lot, that might be a few, but it is about the squad.

“The ones that aren’t starting, when we’re looking at shape in training or whatever, if they decide they’re not interested then they spoil the session for the rest of the players.”

Hurst believes, at this early stage of the season, impact from the bench will be key.

“It’s about trying to keep everyone together, letting them know they’re valued because they are, the three subs might go on and be the difference,” he said.

“As much work as the starters have done, I think subs can be important – I’ll make sure they’re ready.”
