Shrewsbury Town are unlikely to see any of last season’s loan stars return for another spell.

Boss Paul Hurst poured cold water on the prospect of West Brom starlet Tyler Roberts re-joining, alongside any of the other five that finished the season with Town.

Barnsley forward Stefan Payne is a big favourite of Hurst and played a key part in Town securing League One survival. Young midfielder Ryan Yates of Nottingham Forest also did a solid job when called upon in the middle of the park.

Jack Grimmer, Freddie Ladapo and Stephen Humphrys made up last season’s loan crop.

Hurst said: “At the minute I’d say that’s highly unlikely for where we’re at, and I think where one or two others are at in terms of their clubs and their situations.

“Again, I think with that it’s an easy one because they’d be straight on to us if there was something potentially that could be done, but my eyes and ears are elsewhere looking for options.

“I’ve had numerous discussions with Adam (Henshall) in terms of putting calls into clubs.

“It’s difficult because a high percentage of the time the answer you get back is that the manager wants everyone back in to have a look, and that might be the first few pre-season games, it might just be the running, testing whatever it is.”

Hurst added that Town were in ‘dream world’ if they thought securing Roberts, 18, was an option for next season.

“With Ebou we’ve been quite lucky that we’ve been allowed for that to happen.”
