Town had hoped to get the new chief in prior to today's visit of Northampton Town but were left frustrated as talks were unable to progress yesterday.

Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst is understood to be the front-runner, with an official approach lodged by Shrewsbury for the 42-year-old, who guided the Mariners back into the Football League last term.

But Hurst is reportedly set to remain in charge at Blundell Park ahead of Grimsby's clash with Cheltenham today.

Yesterday, Mariners director John Fenty was 'adamant' that Salop had not made an approach for their popular manager.

"I have not received an approach – it is business as usual," said Fenty.

A number of names have been closely linked with the Greenhous Meadow position, 16 days after Micky Mellon departed for Tranmere.

Salop will continue to work on targets over the weekend, after revealing in the week they were down to three final candidates – all having impressed at in the interview process.

Chief executive Brian Caldwell has previously told of his frustration at how the search has stalled, with Town left facing another League One clash under the stewardship of interim boss Danny Coyne as final details failed to be agreed.

Shrewsbury have fallen to three successive defeats since Mellon left the club.

Yeovil Town boss Darren Way was another League Two boss linked with the position yesterday.

But 36-year-old Way, who took over the Glovers in the new year and guided them to safety, looked set to lead his side out at Crewe Alexandra today.

Meanwhile, former favourite with the bookmakers, Kenny Jackett, yesterday linked up with Rotherham United.

The ex-Wolves boss was sought after by Salop supporters as Mellon's replacement but despite appearing at Greenhous Meadow on occasions this season, linked up with the Championship's bottom club following the sacking of Alan Stubbs.

Caldwell had said that certain 'Championship managers' were waiting for an opportunity to return to a similar role.
