Shrewsbury Town have been deluged with applications to become the club's new manager.

Chief executive Brian Caldwell told the Shropshire Star the club had received 'more than 50 applications' within 24 hours of Micky Mellon's departure on Thursday.

However, Caldwell said the club had not yet spoken to any managerial candidates and the first priority was today's game at Bradford City.

Current Morecambe manager and ex-Telford defender Jim Bentley was odds-on favourite with the bookies last night with some quoting odds of 4/9 on the 40-year-old getting the Greenhous Meadow job.

But Caldwell said: "We have had more than 50 applications, calls and notes of interest within the first 24 hours.

"There are lots of names being mentioned but our priority at the moment is the game at Bradford City and trying to get a result there. When that is out of the way, then we will sit down and have a look at the applications."
