Mellon left Shrewsbury by mutual consent following a number of mixed results, most recently following their 2-0 loss to Scunthorpe United in the Checkatrade trophy.
It's understood that Mellon is in line to step into the Tranmere Rovers job, leaving Shrewsbury Town chief executive Brian Caldwell with the task of finding his replacement.
