Micky Mellon hopeful of new signings for Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon hinted that strengthening his squad could be an option as the transfer window deadline looms.
Salop's first-team squad count currently sits at 26 ahead of the window closing at 11pm tonight, with three of those out on loan.
The boss has previously admitted that he was happy with his squad, particularly after completing the loan moves of George Waring and Moha Choulay from Stoke City.
The final departure of the summer was midfielder Richie Wellens, whose contract was mutually terminated last week.
Despite three defeats from five games in League One and a reversal against bottom-of-League Two Cambridge United in the EFL Trophy, Mellon revealed he was keen to work with his squad, but hinted that there could still be business on the final day.
"We want to concentrate on what we've got and work hard with that," he said.
"If anything pops up, because we saw last night that we haven't quite got behind the scenes backing up that first-team - it's not quite as strong as what we'd like it to be.
"But we'll see what happens. If there's some work or business to be done then we'll speak about it when the time's right."
Greenhous Meadow chief Mellon revealed that the cancellation of Wellens' deal, which still had another year to run, did not help free up any budget to attract other targets.
Town suffered a disastrous end to the transfer window last season, with Ryan Woods and Connor Goldson both departing near the end of the window, and it is comforting to the boss that prized assets won't be leaving.
"No not really, Richie leaving didn't free up any of the budget," added Mellon.
"I'll probably tell you how long deadline day makes my day when it finishes later!
"It'll be nice for the club not to have to endure losing players towards the end of the window again. But we kind of knew that we were trying to build something."
