Shrewsbury Town's Dom Smith moves to Barrow
Shrewsbury Town defender Dom Smith has sealed a loan move to National League Barrow until January.
The 20-year-old Welsh defender broke into Micky Mellon's first-team last season, where he played 21 times as Salop secured their League One status.
Shrewsbury-born Smith, who has also spent a season on-loan at Tamworth in non-league, has represented Wales' under-21s and Town Town chief Mellon believes a loan is essential in the promising defender's development.
"The stage that Dom's at in his career we want to keep letting him play football at a a competitive level and keep improving," Mellon told Shrewsburytown.com
"Learn the nuts and bolts of his profession, which is at centre back. Learn about that playing against good sides every week and I think the ideal place for him to do that is at Barrow. So he'll go there and no doubt improve.
"If we don't think there is an immediate opportunity for the young lads to be here, then we'll look to keep their pathway going forward.
"We wanted a challenging environment that would keep moving Dom forward and the Conference Premier is certainly that because he will get tested every week in a very competitive league and it will improve Dom no end for Shrewsbury Town."
