Matt Tootle leaves Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town full-back Matt Tootle has joined Notts County after his Town contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old right-back, who had a year left on his deal at Town, has signed a two-year contract with the League Two club.

He said: "I'm delighted to get it over the line. It's a big club and from what I can see, everything that's happening at the club says it's going to be successful next season."

Tootle made 16 League appearances but didn't play at senior level after the 2-0 defeat at Port Vale October 31.

Tootle, who had been an ever-present in the league until then, lost his place initially to Dominic Smith and then Jermaine Grandison.

Jack Grimmer then arrived on loan from Fulham in January and made the position his own.

A free transfer arrival from Crewe 12 months ago, Tootle returned to contention in March after boss Micky Mellon revealed he had been out with an Achilles injury.

But despite appearing in several reserve games as a defensive midfielder, he never played another first-team game.

Tootle becomes the ninth permanently-signed player to leave the Greenhous Meadow since May.

Grandison, Zak Whitbread, Jordan Clark, Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro, Scott Vernon, Elliot Grandin, Mickey Demetriou and James Caton have all departed.

Mellon is hoping to land Grimmer again but the 22-year-old is set to return to Fulham for pre-season training on Monday and is likely to head out on another loan.

Town's right-back options at the moment are limited to youngsters Smith and Callum Grogan – both career centre-halves – while central midfielder Abu Ogogo played there for Dagenham.

Meanwhile, Mellon welcomed his squad back for the start of pre-season training yesterday admitting he still has some 'wheeling and dealing' to do.

The futures of strikers James Collins and Tyrone Barnett are unclear, while midfielder Richie Wellens has been offered a free transfer.

Elsewhere, striker Kyle Vassell, who failed to score in 13 games on loan at Town from Peterborough, has signed for League Two new-boys Blackpool.
