Town head physio Chris Skitt's finger is on the transfer pulse

Shrewsbury Town head physio Chris Skitt reckons his meticulous medicals can improve players' performance – and even scupper transfers.

Skitt, speaking after putting new signing Antoni Sarcevic through his paces, believes medicals are a vital part of the transfer process.

"As part of the medical, you always find things that you hope to improve on throughout the season and that gives a good progressive plan for the player," the club's head of medical told the club's YouTube channel.

"We also use that to make players more physically robust.

"As far as I'm concerned, it (a medical) is a chance to have a good look at the player and it also gives us a chance to find out anything that's going to be a problem, or potentially a problem in the future.

"If you do find something, it's not the be-all and end-all. It might be something we can isolate and identify to look to improve on."

Skitt revealed he has found problems with potential signings on many occasions.

"I think it's my job to find things out that can hold a transfer up," he added.

"There have been plenty of times where I've had to speak to the chief executive or the manager about things I've found.

"My job is ultimately not to say 'don't sign this player', my job is to put the facts in front of the manager, the chief executive and the chairman and get them to make a decision."

Skitt also explained how he can use data from the medicals to gauge a player's recovery from injury. "You get a good chance to see a lot of baseline measures," he said. "Some of the facts and figures we get as part of this process are invaluable.

"The facts and figures tell you how much leg power they have, so if they get an injury further down the line it allows us to compare where they need to get to after they have lost muscle power or the range of movement."

But for all his painstaking work, Skitt admits the scale of what Town do isn't as thorough compared with Premier League clubs.

"Finances have a massive bearing on things," he added. "For example, in the higher leagues clubs wouldn't think anything of sending a player away for blood tests, whole body scans and x-rays – the list goes on.

"Unfortunately at these kind of levels we haven't got those levels of disposable income, so it's probably a similar process but we add in some techniques.

"In the Premier League all sorts of tests will be done. We'd like to do that but, unfortunately, we're not in a position to."

As for Sarcevic, Skitt says the midfielder is in fine nick. "It looks like he's in really good shape and he's a good athlete," he added.
