AFC Telford are now clinging to their Conference Premier status by goal difference alone after losing 1-0 at Dover.

The Bucks had gone into the match knowing defeat at the Crabble would have confirmed relegation if Alfreton could beat Barnet while Southport avoided defeat against Torquay.

As it happened, Telford were undone by an early Stefan Payne goal but Alferton's 1-1 draw with Barnet ensured they will live to fight another day.

But their relegation will be confirmed if Alfrerton can take a point from next Saturday's trip to Wrexham even if Telford beat Kidderminster.

Dover should have gone in front inside three minutes When Dan Holman put Payne through on goal.

But Bucks shotstopper James Montgomery did well to race off his line and smother the striker's low close range effort.

But Payne made no mistake when the next chance arrived just a minute later to put the home side 1-0 up.

Tom Murphy's cross was inadvertently diverted into his path off Bucks defender Glenn Matthews and the forward slotted home from six yards out.

The hosts failed to add to that tally before half time despite a series of decent half chances.

Murphy forced a solid save with a curling effort from the edge of the box just after the half hour mark, and Holman flashed a better strike just wide soon afterwards.

Tony Gray almost pulled Telford level with his team's first attack of real quality in 38 minutes though.

Godfrey Poku did very well to win the ball in midfield before clipping an inch perfect pass to Danny Ventre.

His well-weighted through ball put Gray in on goal only for Mitch Walker to save his accurate low drive with his feet.

But Payne should have made it 2-0 in the last minute of the first half only to drill high over the bar from a great position inside the area.

Gray should have made it 1-1 soon after the re-start but could only prod straight at Walker following a defensive slip.

But Holman should have made it 2-0 at the other end with a superb curling effort following good work from Nicky Deverdics and Murphy.

Sean Clancy wasted a couple of inviting set pieces opportunities for the visitors, hammering a free kick over the bar and a corner kick into the side netting.

And neither Gray or substitute Sam Smith could get a decisive touch on Neill Byrne's excellent cross with six minutes remaining.
