New boss must bring style to AFC Telford

AFC Telford United managing director Lee Carter insists the club's next manager must help bring the fans back.

The Bucks have seen falling attendances at the New Bucks Head over the last two seasons, despite winning the Conference North under Liam Watson in the last campaign.

And Carter added that Watson's successor will be asked to deliver an exciting playing style that can help coax lapsed supporters back to the club.

He said: "We want a style of football that at least gets the fans up and at it. That played into the decision in the end. But, from a personal point of view, I have watched Tottenham for a long time.

"You can play 'the Tottenham way' but they have won nothing for years playing that way. So it is not about being fancy, fancy, but it is about playing football that gets fans excited.

"I can say hand on heart, having watched Telford for a long time now, that I can't identify a 'Telford way.'

"But I think the next manager will have to demonstrate to us what kind of style he is going to adopt.

"And that kind of style has got to be one that we think the fans will be responsive to – whether it is functional but with a bit of combat or whether it is 'pure football' we don't know.

"But we want an exciting style and hopefully the whole club will follow and flow from that going forward."

The new manager's main priority will be to keep the Bucks in non-league's top flight.

And Carter promised he will be backed with significant funds to improve the playing squad when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Telford have enjoyed a lucrative FA Cup run this season and also completed the joint highest player sale in the reformed club's history, when striker Mike Phenix went to League One Barnsley in October.

The overall deal is thought to be worth £25,000 and Carter added that it had been important to make a managerial change in time to allow the new boss to make permanent signings.
