AFC Telford boss Liam Watson takes his share of blame

AFC Telford boss Liam Watson has warned his players that everyone at the club needs to do better – himself included.

The Bucks head into their Conference Premier game with high-flying Grimsby this weekend on the back of a hugely disappointing display against Braintree last time out.

Watson made three changes at half-time in that fixture after his team found themselves 3-0 down in a performance the boss felt was "unacceptable."

And Watson believes it was the glamour of an FA Cup tie with League One Bristol City that distracted them.

"After the game I said I thought we looked a bit leg heavy but now I have had more time to think about it," he said.

"I think one or two players were paying more attention to the FA Cup than who they were playing on Saturday.

"The Bristol City game should be a nice distraction but instead they put in the worst 45-minute performance I have seen this season.

"I have been a manger for 15 years and never have I brought three people off at half-time and I would have taken more off if I could.

"But I have to be critical of myself as well. I picked the wrong team and we set up in the wrong shape. They did well on the Tuesday so I decided to stick with that side but it was the wrong decision.

"That game has gone now and we just have to concentrate on Grimsby."

In a bid to get some freshness back into the legs, the Bucks had a single training session last night instead of holding sessions on Tuesday and Thursday.

"I feel that is what they need after a difficult couple of weeks," Watson said.

"We have been playing two games a week and that affects your energy levels especially when you playing in wet conditions."
