Liam Watson's 'Savage' streak for AFC Telford

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson wants his team to adopt a 'savage' streak following their shock 3-1 win at Woking.

The Bucks are bottom of the Conference Premier but claimed their first away win of the season on Saturday, against a side that started the match in second place.

Watson called on his players to take inspiration from Robbie Savage's impressive career as they aim to defy the odds in their Conference Premier relegation battle.

He said: "Sometimes people are out of their depth at a level, but they still give you everything.

"If you look at the likes of Robbie Savage whose gone on and played all kinds of games for Wales and played in the Premier League, would people say he was Premier League level?

"Probably not but he was a winner, he didn't give anyone a minute's rest. People didn't like playing against him and that is how we have got to be."

Watson then got to speak to Savage on BBC Radio 5 Live's 606 national phone-in show, after Telford had been named as the programme's Non-League Team of the Day.

Savage, who co-presents the show, pretended to take offence at Watson's post-match comment, pointing out that he had played 346 top-flight games and made 39 international appearances.

But the former Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County star added: "I'll take it as a back-handed compliment.

"I think what Liam is trying to say is, yeah I wasn't technically the best but you give it your best and try hard."

Savage, who turned 40 on Saturday, added in jest: "Fantastic result mate. You are my non-League team of the day but, I tell you what, you are not going to be ever again."

When asked directly by Savage, "So do you think I was out of my depth?', Watson responded by taking a humorous swipe at the retired midfielder's notorious dress sense.

He said: "Probably your choice of clobber was."
