Adam Farrell backs Tony Gray at AFC Telford

Adam Farrell is backing fellow striker Tony Gray to stay on the goal trail for AFC Telford United following his first of the season against Southport.

Gray made the most of his first start of the campaign on Bank Holiday Monday, netting a 53rd minute equaliser as the Bucks battled to a 3-3 draw.

And Farrell, who was last season's top scorer as Telford won the Conference North, said: "Tony is a good finisher. He just needs to kick on now for the rest of the season.

"He wasn't involved against Bristol Rovers on Saturday but he came in on Monday and did really well.

"He held the ball up and played it well for the team. He is a good player."

Farrell's praise comes just days after manager Liam Watson branded him the best finisher in the team following his exploits against Southport.

Watson said: "I thought he was outstanding on Monday. He thoroughly deserved his goal. I have had him as a player for many years.

"I have sold him three times and I have signed him twice, so I know that when he gets on a roll he will score goal. He is, by far, the best finisher in the club."

Farrell, who created Telford's 89th minute leveller for Mike Phenix after coming off the bench on Monday, is still searching for a first goal of the campaign.

The former AFC Fylde hitman has though seen his game time divided between a role up front and one in midfield.

And while he is happy to play wherever he is needed, he is hungry for more time in his preferred role.

He said: "I just want to play although, preferably, I would like to be up front. I came on for the last 20 minutes on Monday and thought I did all right when I went up top.

"I would like to play there again, with 11 men on the pitch and from the start."

Telford had to contend with the sending off of midfielder Godfrey Poku just before half-time on Monday, following a skirmish with Southport forward Richard Brodie.

In the circumstances, Farrell was relieved to have taken a point, but he added: "After drawing on Monday, I think the Dartford game on Saturday is a must-win now."

"Then, hopefully, that will give us a bit of momentum to carry on and get another victory against Dover next Saturday, as well."
