Further players could be leaving AFC Telford

AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson today warned there could be further departures before they kick off back in the Skrill Conference Premier.

Last season's captain Simon Grand is the latest to depart from the New Bucks Head, opting to stay in the Conference North and sign for Barrow.

Long-serving goalkeeper Ryan Young, Dan Preston and Matthew McGinn have also left, despite being first-team regulars last season.

Watson has brought in Southport defender Steve Akrigg, Witton Albion winger Josh Hancock and Grimsby Town shot-stopper Jonathan Hedge.

With a list of his own transfer targets to pursue, the Bucks boss is not averse to letting more players go, even if they are still under contract for another season.

He said: "There will be other departures between now and the start of the season. Things change with people and they may not want to play here anymore.

"If you look at the people who are moving on, they are being replaced. I wouldn't say anyone has anything pinned down, we need to have options."

Non-contract winger Robbie Booth could still have a future at the club, but there has been interest with Warrington Town.

He said: "There are a few clubs who have spoken to Robbie, which is understandable, but I also plan to have a chat with him. He hasn't been released.

"He's a top player, you don't win six title medals if you aren't. I know he's had interest from the Northern League and he's got a new job recently."

The Telford chief also gave midfielder Russell Benjamin permission to talk to Stockport County this week and has agreed a nominal fee with the Hatters, subject to personal terms.

He said: "I am just being honest with Russell. From his point of view, I think this is the best option for him. It's right that he should look to play every week.

"He wasn't doing that with us in the second half of last season and I can't guarantee him that as we go forward. We have reached a deal with Stockport."
