Phil Trainer poised for return to AFC Telford
AFC Telford United will welcome former fans' favourite Phil Trainer back to the New Bucks Head when the midfielder lines up for Worcester City.
Trainer's four-year stay with the club ended in the summer after he failed to agree a new contract and then joined Skrill Conference Premier club Nuneaton.
He's back in non-league's second tier, the Skrill Conference North, temporarily after joining Worcester on a month's loan and tonight's game will be his third start.
The 32-year-old will forever be etched into the 'new' AFC Telford's club folklore, having played a significant part in two memorable moments of their nine-year history.
He scored a late promotion-winning goal in the 2011 Conference North play-off final against Guiseley and netted the strike which kept them in the Conference National the following year.
Current Telford manager Liam Watson never worked with Trainer, who is on a month's loan at Worcester, but another former Buck, Nathan Rooney, is likely to be on the bench for the visitors.
Former Wolves reserve team captain Rooney failed to win a deal after spending pre-season under Watson, who even tried to get him back into the full-time game after releasing him.
Watson recalled: "While it's nice to see Nathan back here, I really wanted him to get a full-time club. He went to Dundee, which is something I sorted for him, but it never quite worked out.
"He did have other options with Hereford and a couple of Welsh clubs interested."
Trainer's arrival at Worcester came hot on the heels of a departure of a third ex-Buck, Luke Hubbins. The winger, who is a devout Muslim, is taking a sabbatical from the game.
