AFC Telford boss buoyed by midfield duo

AFC Telford boss Liam Watson believes new-boy Mike Grogan is getting the best out of midfield partner Charlie Barnett as the pair prepare to face Worcester.

Grogan impressed on his debut in Saturday's 4-1 win against visiting Colwyn Bay alongside Barnett, who has flattered to deceive since his summer arrival.

The former Liverpool and England youth player dropped out of full-time football after leaving Accrington Stanley in the close season and is playing in non-league for the first time.

But Watson feels Grogan could be an ideal foil for Barnett as the two line up in the Skrill Conference North tonight, with Alan Moogan injured and Russell Benjamin two games into a three-match ban.

Watson said: "I thought Mike Grogan was our best player by a country mile on Saturday, he just made us compete and, if you get one player doing that, it's infectious.

"He helped Charlie and vice versa really, they helped each other. We saw Charlie on the ball more than we have done in the past few games."

The Bucks boss also still has summer signing Sean Cooke waiting to make his competitive bow after a fractured leg, after being included in a match-day squad for the first time on Saturday.

Watson said: "It's a shame we couldn't make four substitutions on Saturday, because I wanted to bring 'Cookie' on.

"The easiest thing to do would be to put him out on loan, but he's too good a player and we have to look after him in the correct way.

"People would be expecting him to rip up trees elsewhere."
