AFC Telford boss targets a winning double
AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson today targeted a Skrill Conference North double to take his side to the golden 20 point mark from their first 10 games.
Saturday's 4-1 success at home to Colwyn Bay took Telford to 14 points from eight matches, ahead of the visit of Worcester City tomorrow night.
Then comes league rivals Hednesford Town at home in the FA Cup second qualifying round on Saturday, before a tricky trip to Histon in the Skrill North the following weekend.
And the Bucks manager has told his side it's paramount they sweep the board across those fixtures, to give them a realistic chance of becoming champions.
Victory against Colwyn Bay has given them a spring in their step and was the perfect response to a dire 3-1 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue in their preceding fixture.
Watson said: "I didn't get too carried away when we were absolutely dreadful the previous week and I am not going to get too carried away about Saturday.
"The 10 game mark will tell me about where I am going to be at the end of the season, that's when all of the talk about gelling and the amount of signings we have made goes out of the window.
"If we can win our next two games, that would give us 20 points, which tells me that we stand a realistic chance of winning the league.
"If we end up with 14 points, we might have a fight on our hands to get into the play-offs."
The manager did recall the tale of Kidderminster Harriers when they, Watson's Southport and Telford were in the Conference Premier last season.
Harriers endured a dreadful start but came flying back to push for the title before finishing second, but Watson won't be pinning his hopes on that happening again.
He said: "There can be extreme circumstances, Kidderminster Harriers took five points out of their first 10 games last season and nearly won the league.
"I am talking about that because that doesn't happen very often, it's a freak. Basically, your first 10 games are important."
Telford came from a goal behind, conceding after just six minutes to Colwyn Bay's Jamie Crowther, to romp to victory on Saturday.
Robbie Booth scored his first competitive goal for the club with the equaliser before captain Simon Grand put them ahead, substitutes Matthew McGinn and Mike Phenix making sure of three points.
