AFC Telford ace Alan Moogan faces surgery

AFC Telford United midfielder Alan Moogan is set to undergo surgery on his injured groin as he faces up to the prospect of further weeks on the sidelines.

The Bucks' player-coach has already missed four games after coming off injured at half-time in the 2-1 win at Gloucester City.

With Russell Benjamin about to start a three-match suspension, Mike Grogan is set to sign from Cammell Laird today with no prospect of a swift return for Moogan.

The former Everton youngster has a condition called Gilmore's Groin, which is only usually rectified by going under the knife and would mean a longer recovery process.

The 29-year-old is still actively a part of the club through his coaching duties, but Telford manager Liam Watson admitted it could be some time before he's back on the pitch.

Watson said: "It's a hernia for sports people which is very difficult to diagnose, it will definitely require surgery. That's why we are looking to bring Mike in.

"He's not seen another specialist, as yet, I don't think it's that easy that you can just ring up and go! But he's still very much involved as a coach.

"He's got bags of experience and is a winner, so he's a good voice to have around."

Benjamin aside, there could be further changes for Saturday's Skrill Conference North visit of Colwyn Bay to the New Bucks Head.

Grogan is nailed on for a starting place if his move goes through, while strikers Tony Gray and Adam Farrell are under threat of the axe.

Farrell scored in the disappointing 3-1 defeat against Bradford Park Avenue at the weekend, so it could well be Gray who is dropped in favour of Andy Owens.

Robbie Booth is also in line to be brought into the team with Watson looking to ditch the 3-5-2 formation, which could result in the sacrifice of a centre-back.

Captain Simon Grand, Neill Byrne and Dan Preston all played at the Avenue, but the Bucks boss hinted one of them could drop to the bench.

Watson said: "I am still not convinced up front, that's where we are not firing. Andy is one that could quite possibly start on Saturday.

"Andy Owens started the season but tweaked his back and hasn't been in the team. He's looked lively when he has come on in the past few games.

"I think Robbie needs to come into the team and I would think that will result in a change of formation. We will probably go with two centre-backs."
