Bucks are ready to offer Martyn Jackson a deal

Liam Watson today confirmed AFC Telford will be offering Martyn Jackson a deal – when the midfielder returns from holiday.

The 19-year-old former Manchester United and Burnley trainee has been on trial at the New Bucks Head.

Boss Watson has been impressed by Jackson, who has only played first-team football in the North West Counties League after leaving Burnley, though he has previously mooted the idea of sending him out on loan to gain experience.

But any deal will have to wait for later this week when the player returns from his summer holiday.

"I'm not looking to bring any more players in but we will get something sorted for Martyn Jackson this week," said Watson.

"We hoped to get it done sooner but he's away on holiday. Why any footballer would choose to go away at this time of year I'm not sure."

Watson admitted he has several big decisions to make ahead of AFC Telford's Skrill Conference North opener.

Several players made strong cases to be included in Saturday's clash with Workington as the Bucks rounded off pre-season with a comfortable 4-0 win over League of Wales outfit Bangor City.

Strikers Andy Owens and Tony Gray both scored two and have put themselves in the frame, though the manager is a big fan of Adam Farrell.

Watson was also impressed with Russell Benjamin in midfield and conceded he is yet to make a decision over who will partner Simon Grand in the centre of defence.

"I thought Russell was outstanding on Saturday, he covered pretty much every blade of grass," said Watson.

"Tony and Andy have also given me something to think about. I'm really keen on Adam Farrell but the starting front pair is not a given either.

"We know Matty McGinn is definitely suspended so you would expect Chris Lever to come in at left-back."

Watson also must to decide whether to include Charlie Barrett in midfield. The 24-year-old signed for the Bucks last week but is short of match fitness.

"I probably knew my starting XI for Workington ahead of Saturday but a few people have played their way into the reckoning," added Watson.
