AFC Telford hope to sign midfielder Charlie Barnett
AFC Telford hope to complete the signing of former England youth international Charlie Barnett today after fielding the midfielder in the friendly win over West Brom.
The 24-year-old free agent caught the eye as a second-half substitute and has some pedigree, after representing his country at junior level as a youngster at Liverpool.
Barnett has more than 100 games of experience in the Football League after spells with Tranmere and Accrington Stanley, whom he left at the end of last season.
Bucks manager Liam Watson considers the playmaker's capture somewhat of a coup, having insisted he didn't think the player was a realistic target.
Barnett has already turned down a deal at Macclesfield, with Morecambe having also showed an interest earlier in the summer.
He considers part-time football at the New Bucks Head his best move and is looking at studying in the area with a physiotherapy degree at the Telford campus of the University of Wolverhampton.
Watson ditched a season-long loan for Mansfield's Godfrey Poku to line up Barnett.
He said: "It's just a case of him signing on the dotted line and, now managing director Lee Carter is back from his holiday, I would like to think he will sign today.
"As soon as we knew there was a possibility of him coming here, it was important we did our best to make it happen. I didn't really think there was a chance he would come here.
"He's a typical one of my signings – someone who has lost their way a bit, we put them back together and, if they do as well as they can do, they will move on. If something comes along bigger and better, we will help them to make that happen."
Barnett showed nice touches after coming on during Saturday's game while winger Sean Clancy also caught the eye.
Robbie Booth is another and played his way into a deal after impressing Watson during pre-season.
The Bucks boss said: "Sean Clancy has lost his way a little bit over the 18 months, but he was excellent on Saturday.
"Robbie Booth is another one – he's probably been the stand-out player. It's about taking your chances when they come."
