The out-of-contract former Wolves reserve team captain has come back to the New Bucks Head to try to earn a new contract.

And the 20-year-old has been impressed with the quality of signings brought in by new boss Liam Watson in the close season, but he is hopeful he can do enough to earn a place in the squad.

Rooney has had talks with various clubs but says none of them have been right and he has set his sights on a new contract with Telford for the 2013-14 season.

He said: "I went away for the summer, I spoke to a few clubs but none of them were really appealing.

"It's still early in pre-season. Whether I stay here, I don't know but I would like to get a contract.

"There's a great group of lads here and they are more than capable of going up.

"I'm not quite sure how hard it will be to win a place in the squad yet.

"I have just got to impress and show what I can do."

Rooney will not have damaged his cause by scoring the first goal and creating the second in Tuesday's 3-0 Shropshire Senior Cup semi-final win over Shawbury United.

He has also impressed Watson with his attitude and work rate in training so far and he is keen to build on that by performing in forthcoming games.

He said: "I have got to get a bit more fit but I think I have done well with the running so hopefully I can take it onto the field."
