AFC Telford still hoping to keep Phil Trainer

AFC Telford United bosses have quashed rumours that midfielder Phil Trainer has signed for Blue Square Premier outfit Nuneaton.

Speculation that fans' favourite Trainer had secured a move to Kevin Wilkin's Boro began surfacing on online message boards over the weekend.

But the club responded by posting on its twitter account that this is not the case.

Trainer has been offered a new contract to keep him at the New Bucks Head for the forthcoming season although the deal has yet to be accepted by the player.

The club statement reads: "Despite rumours to the contrary, Phil Trainer has not signed for Nuneaton. He's still mulling over our offer."

Trainer is so far only the fourth player from last season's squad to have been offered a new contract following the Bucks relegation from non-league's top flight.

The Bucks squad is currently undergoing a significant overhaul as manager Liam Watson sets about building a team capable of mounting a promotion push back towards the Conference National.

A total of 14 players from last season's squad have departed the New Bucks Head in the close season, with midfielder Christian Smith and defender Kris Taylor becoming the latest to move on late last week.

Both players were out of contract at Telford this summer. Smith joined Blue Square Bet South outfit Chelmsford City on Thursday while Taylor has signed a deal with newly-promoted Hednesford Town.
