AFC Telford target an experienced defender

An experienced centre-half is one of AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson's priorities as he aims to build a team capable of achieving promotion.

The recently-appointed Bucks chief has already brought in former Southport stopper Simon Grand to help boost his ranks in that area.

Fellow centre-back Dan Preston has also been handed a new deal but Watson is keen to add further strength and cover at the back.

And he is ideally looking for a battle-hardened player with significant experience to provide competition in central defence.

He said: "I need another centre-half. We have got one or two targets. We want someone who is not an old player, but who has played a lot of football."

Watson added that he was not a huge fan of 'so-called footballing centre-halves' and was, ideally, looking for a brave defender who will be strong in the basics required for the position.

The Bucks' rearguard has already undergone a significant overhaul so far in the close season, with Watson having successfully attracted three new defenders to the club.

Grand, who arrived at the New Bucks Head earlier this month, was joined by full-backs Matthew McGinn and Wes Bains last week.

The former Chester City duo play at left-back and right-back respectively, while previous first choice defenders in those positions Ryan Valentine and Will Salmon have both departed.

Centre-half Jordan Rose was also shown the door following the end of the season, after finishing it on loan at Blue Square Premier outfit Alfreton.

Meanwhile, the club has announced that new player sponsorship packages are now available for the forthcoming campaign.

The Bucks now has 10 players signed up altogether and fans, businesses, groups and organisations are being urged to sign up by June 28.

Packages bought before this deadline will include meeting the player at an upcoming open day, a picture taken with the player and a complimentary 2013-14 first team shirt signed by the player before the general release.

Other features will be inclusion in the matchday programme for the season, inclusion on the player's picture on the website as well as the player sponsor page.

The cost will be £250 and additional sponsorship of the away kit is also available.
