AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson has secured a trio of signings as he steps up his rebuilding programme at the New Bucks Head.

Former Chester defenders Matthew McGinn and Wes Baynes have been joined by wing prospect Mike Phenix in agreeing terms with the Bucks.

Both McGinn and Baynes helped Chester to the Blue Square Bet North title last month, but then asked to leave because of the long-distance travelling commitments demanded in the fifth tier.

Bucks boss Watson believes they will add quality to a new back four beginning to take shape after his previous capture of ex-Southport man Simon Grand.

Baynes, 24, who made over 50 starts for Wrexham before joining his hometown club two years ago, has signed a two-year contract.

McGinn, 29, renowned for his attacking instincts down the left, and wideman Phenix, who made his mark in Skelmersdale's title-winning side in the Evo-Stik League First Division North last term, have signed one-year deals.

Watson, whose recruitment drive could see up to 16 new faces arrive this summer, said: "Wes is a right-back of great quality.

"Chester are going for older, experienced players in the Conference, so we are pleased to get both him and Matty. Mike is one we had identified as a signing for Southport.

"He's a big, powerful winger who will chip in with goals."

He has already signed ex-Fleetwood midfielder Sean Clancy and has revealed he is in talks with another couple of targets.

But defender Will Salmon will be leaving. Watson expressed an interest in keeping the Basingstoke-based right-back.

However, the unfavourable geography of the Blue Square North has encouraged the player to seek a club nearer his home.

He said: "I have a lot of respect for Liam but I decided to turn down a deal and move on for personal reasons, 80 per cent of which was down to the travelling,.

"I have spoken to a few managers but not sorted anything out yet. I have got fond memories of Telford and winning the play-off final in 2011 was the best.

"We may have had downs last season but it was a good learning curve for me."

Meanwhile, former striker, and last season's leading scorer, Steve Jones has joined Welsh Premier outfit Airbus UK.

The one-time Northern Ireland international was recently told there was no contract on the table for him with the Bucks.
