Blog: AFC Telford AWOL on mad day at Woking
AFC Telford United's new found defensive organisation well and truly went AWOL at Woking, writes blogger Rob Hughes.
Despite carrying an attacking threat, if sometimes absent finishing touch, on Saturday at the Kingfield Stadium. A slow start saw us out of the game before it had even gotten going.
Then just as we looked like we were going to be able to claim our second point in four days, a combination of fate and lacking concentration - conspired against us and we left empty handed again.
What can only be termed a defensive horror show indicates the necessity of the next manager to spend next pre-season ensuring we have a solid back four or five, with competition for places.
Something we haven't had this season. Our full backs too often got exposed and centrally we showed our all too common frailties. Michael Briscoe showed that he has missed a massive chunk of the season.
Many people's choice of man of the match on Wednesday was forced off and the usually ever-reliable goalkeeper Ryan Young had a moment!
If we can't forgive him that though after all that he has done this and every season in fact since he got here, then it's a sorry state of affairs!
A horrible first-half where their goal seemed to repel opportunities almost independently of anything else.
Steve Jones missed an open goal, the goalkeeper making a point blank save and other chances left the ground rather than rippling the back of the net.
The Telford front two managed to breach the force field in the second-half, unfortunately only on two occasions compared to Woking's superior goal tally.
Very few came out of the first half with a great deal of satisfaction but, fortunately, boss John Psaras and his assistant Alex Meechan were able to perk things up somewhat in time for the second period.
The second half saw Rooney, back in the central areas alongside Trainer, which had proved so effective earlier on in the season and he equipped himself better in the engine room that Crainey had managed.
Meechan made his return and gave a typically committed, energetic performance, tracking back and giving his all. Unfortunately he wasn't able to cap his homecoming game with a goal!
And Spray gave his all for the cause once again, not in his most natural position. Could things have been different with a fully-fit Luke Hubbins offering his electric pace down the right flank?
That's one of the things we won't know. Now we have to turn our attentions to the game away to Macclesfield tomorrow night.
Our final chance to try and register that victory and stave off that unwanted AP Leamington record that has stood for far too long, and stands a record that we do not want to hold.
Unfortunately, as time has gone by we have become increasingly linked to it - here's hoping it is soon forgotten by other clubs after we register victory on Tuesday!
I'm still looking to see a couple of youngsters being given the opportunity, seven wins in seven is virtually impossible. Let's have a look now and see what the kids are like.
O'Neil has been involved with the squad the last couple of matches. Surely it couldn't do him any harm to give him a start and give him the impetus to kick on and cement a place in the side for next season?
So, what's next? Backing and supporting the club through to the end of the season and preparing ourselves for the next rollercoaster ride that is about to set off. Who's in?
