John Psaras pleased with AFC Telford work rate

New AFC Telford United caretaker manager John Psaras hailed his team's work rate after his first game in charge ended with a goalless draw with Gateshead.

Last night's result leaves the Bucks still marooned at the bottom of the Blue Square Premier, eight points adrift of safety, and extends their winless league run to 24 matches.

But it also brought them their first point in four matches and their first clean sheet in nine games.

At the final whistle, the team was clapped off the pitch at by a home crowd appreciative of a determined display from the team, following a hectic build-up which saw previous caretaker boss Graham Hyde resign on Sunday.

Psaras said: "The work rate was absolutely first class for 99 per cent of the game. Just going forward we needed a little bit more composure in front of goal, a little bit more movement.

"We had a go with Steve Jones and Aaron Williams up front. I thought they worked really hard but they flicked balls when I have been saying 'have a touch, then lay it off.' But it will come.

"The most important thing for me last night was that we looked like a team that was going to work hard.

"The only way we are going to get the fans on our side is if we work hard and they have done that."

Psarsas was only able to name four substitutes for the game because of injuries to Jay Smith and Luke Hubbins, while assistant boss Alex Meechan did not get international clearance through in time to be involved.

He added: "The chairman has said to me that I can bring in more players if I want to."
