Mark Cooper targets new defender for AFC Telford
AFC Telford United manager Mark Cooper will continue his efforts to strengthen his brittle defence this week after conceding two soft goals in the 2-1 loss at Newport County.
The Bucks chief had hoped to put their title-chasing opponents under pressure on Saturday and fielded an attacking line-up but his side were again undone by lax defending.
The loss, which was the Bucks 15th of the season, leaves them without a league win in their last 21 games and they remain four points adrift at the bottom of the Blue Square Bet Premier.
Cooper said: "We need to be better all round defensively. We are going to try to reinforce this week.
"If we can do something about it we will. I know the chairman is working hard to try to do something for us."
The manager's desire to bring in a centre-back could also dictate whether striker Richard Peniket's loan from Fulham is extended this week.
Saturday's game was the last of Peniket's one-month loan from the Premier League side.
Asked if the deal would be extended Cooper said: "I have got to speak to him. We have got a certain amount of money available. It may be that we put that money towards a defender."
