Gareth Owen on list of targets for AFC Telford

AFC Telford United are tracking former Port Vale stalwart Gareth Owen among several defenders targeted by boss Andy Sinton to aid the club's drop fight.

The Bucks boss is desperate to bolster his ranks with an experienced centre-half, after his side slipped back into the Blue Square Premier's bottom four following last weekend's goalless draw with Alfreton.

Owen, who had his contract with Vale cancelled by mutual consent earlier this month, fits the bill as the type of leader suited to a relegation battle.

While the 30-year-old managed just one start this term for the League Two outfit after struggling with injuries during 2011-12, he wants to carry on his playing career while exploring coaching and media opportunities.

Sinton missed out on one defensive target last week, but is stepping up his search as his options have been reduced in recent weeks by injuries and departures.

Ryan Valentine has been laid low with a groin problem and Michael Briscoe is sidelined until March because of a back injury.

Meanwhile, Tom Roberts, Chris Blackburn and loanee Michael Wylde have all left the New Bucks Head.

Sinton outlined: "I will be speaking to the club regarding somebody that we might be able to get this week who would fit the bill.

"I just think we need an organiser to steady things down a little bit."

Telford's tight finances continue to restrict his recruitment plans, with deals for more than a dozen potential new recruits all failing to get off the ground.

For instance, one such move for Grimsby Town midfielder Louis Soares was unsuccessful, witth he player opting to join Alfreton on loan instead.

Sinton added: "I must have lined up 15 targets since New Year's Day."
