A whip round by kind-hearted AFC Telford United fans at The Bucks' home game with Redditch United raised almost £800 for long-term injury absentee Sean Evans.
The cash-strapped player was not in luck for long after the generous collection, however, as his car broke down on the way home.
He now faces a bill to get his Vauxhall Corsa on the road at a time when he is already feeling the pinch as he has been unable to work since breaking his leg during a pre-season friendly against Wolves in the summer.
Fans raised the cash for Sean by passing round a bucket for donations at Tuesday's home game and hundreds chipped in.
The club has also set up a web page - www.telfordutd.co.uk/seanevans - where supporters can make donations to help support Sean until he can work and play again.
Sean, a former youngster with Shrewsbury Town and Manchester United, was initially told he would never play again in the hours after his horrific injury.
The 23-year-old builder's labourer is now back working in the gym to improve his overall fitness and hopes to get the all-clear to start running early in 2011 but he has been unable to work since suffering the break and admits financial worries have dogged his mind.
"I just want to say a massive thank you to the club and to all those generous people who contributed to the collection for me.
"The money will help me a great deal.
