Richard Gardner quits as Shifnal Town boss
Richard Gardner today explained his decision to resign as manager of Shifnal Town.
Gardner quit his post at the West Midlands League Premier Division outfit the night before Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to Bustleholme.
He alleged that rumours suggesting the club were going to replace him and assistant boss Richie Allen in the summer forced him to make the decision.
Gardner said: "I don't like hearing rumours and I don't like things being done behind my back. I don't deserve that.
"I am not going to put any more time and effort in to somewhere where I am not wanted."
New chairman and former AFC Telford United defender Dean Craven took the team for the match at Phoenix Park, where they struggled to field a side.
A club statement claimed some of the squad refused to play in the fixture, but they did manage to get 11 players out to complete the full 90 minutes.
It read: "Richard asked for a meeting with the committee of the club, during which he and his management team were given assurances that their position was secure.
"At the end of the current season, the situation would then be reviewed."
