James Coggins quits amid bust-up inquiry
James Coggins has quit as captain of Market Drayton Cricket Club in the wake of an alleged bust-up during their game against table-toppers Whitchurch.
And Dhram Singh, the Drayton player who was involved in the alleged row, has told the club he no longer wants to play in the Henshalls Insurance Shropshire League.
League secretary Brian Kitson would confirm only that officials were in the process of conducting an investigation into an incident at the Whitchurch v Market Drayton match on May 20.
A points deduction is a possibility, although Kitson confirmed neither side had received that punishment at this stage.
Coggins would add only that he will continue to play, if selected, for Market Drayton. “I’ve been told not to say anything publicly at this stage,” he added.
Coggins was seen conferring with Singh, his opening partner. Singh was out shortly afterwards.
Drayton went on to lose the game against the Premier Division leaders, their last wicket falling just four runs short of victory.
Under the five years of Coggins’s captaincy, Drayton have flourished, winning promotion at first and second team level and, as a club, now run three senior teams and a junior section of about 100, including a girls team launched this week.
Having won promotion to the Premier Division last season, Drayton have settled well and are currently ninth in the table ahead of a trip to Quatt on Saturday.
Whitchurch chairman Rod Jones said: “We’ve done nothing wrong so we have no comment to make.”
