The first league matches in Shropshire this year will be played tomorrow afternoon – but there won’t be as many fixtures as had been hoped, writes Malcolm Fletcher.

It’s curtain up time for Division One teams in the Salop Leisure Shrewsbury Senior Citizens League with reigning champions Pontesbury A travelling to face Unison.

But Batttlefield A, runners-up last year, won’t now have a game following the demise of Wem Albion, just weeks after Wem BC had to call time on their Tanners Shropshire League side.

“Wem Albion A have withdrawn from the league and so all of their matches in Division One will now be a bye,” confirmed the veterans league chief Chris Kershaw.

Tomorrow’s other six-a-side Division One openers are Bayston Hill A versus Hadnall A, Craven Arms against Old Shrewsbury A, Oswestry Church A at home to Albert Road A, Preston Brockhurst A against Llanymynech while Telepost entertain Meole Brace A.
