Shropshire flying in British Ladies Championship

To win their British Ladies County Championship qualifying group without losing a game – that's the aim for Shropshire Ladies.

They surged towards the semi-finals by walloping Wales and defeated their cross-border rivals by 90 shots overall.

They took control of Group Four as the only unbeaten side – and there's just two games to go before the knockout stages start on August 18.

Sunday's success was built on a superb 62-chalk victory away at Conwy while a 28-point margin at Broseley Social would have been the least they had expected.

But it didn't look so good early on as the Welsh stormed 23 up overall, despite Sonya Lucas winning 21-7 at the North Wales coastal resort.

Shropshire Ladies association secretary Angela Gaut said: "Then our middle fours got the bit between their teeth and turned the deficit right round.

"We won all eight games to give us the lead by 58."

Jane Archer (21-7), Evelyn Jones (21-8), Clair Barker (21-10) and Julie Pearce (21-15) did the damage away while the on-song Karen Smith and Pauline Grocott both won to eight at Broseley.

Shropshire built on the advantage by winning six of the last eight games in both legs, Tracy Ryan starring at Conwy with a 21-9 card at No.12 while Sue Creen was the 21-10 best at home.

Gaut exclaimed: "Great job – well done everyone. It was a fantastic result by a fantastic team!

"It's Wirral next on July 7 so let's keep up our rampage and try winning the group without a loss – that's our aim."
