Waiting game for Newport in title race
The champagne remains on ice for Newport who will have to wait another week to secure a successful defence of their Furrows Shropshire Premier Bowls League title.
An 11-point return at Wem SC last night would have wrapped up a second championship in as many years for Dale Rudrum's side, but they were forced to settle for eight after claiming the aggregate by 16.
Newport now entertain their last remaining rival for the title – Meole Brace – in the final game next Friday requiring two points out of a possible 14 to make certain of the title.
Last nights results: Ifton 10 Agg+35 (Leighton Roberts 21-7) Sir J Bayley 4 (Peter Grimston 21-8), St Georges 10 +53 (Glyn Picknell, Alan Palin 21-5) Ford 4 (John Nash 21-11), Bowring 8 +42 (Brian Jarvis 21-4) Castlefields 6 (Keith Wall 21-11), Arch W'ton 8 +1 Chester Road 6, Wem USC 6 (Colin Smith 21-6) Newport 8 +16 (Alan Davidson 21-6), Bylet 5 (Matthew Ealey 21-6) Wrock Wood 9 +14 (Phil Clee 21-5)
