Dave Rogers has quit as captain of Chester Road Bowling Club – despite his side being on course for a Shropshire double.

Rogers has refused to divulge the reasons for his shock decision to leave the post at the midway point of a season in which his side are well placed for Furrows Shropshire Premier League and County Cup glory.

But he has confirmed that a bowling rather than a personal factor had made him reach the decision after 12 years at the helm.

He said: "I'm not going to go into details because my team-mates don't know the reasons. It was a very, very tough call but, hopefully, it will be in the best interests of the club."

Rogers has largely filled the role of non-playing captain this year and has successfully steered his side to the top of the Premier League and into the semi-finals of the County Cup.

Chester Road were also narrowly beaten by St Georges by two shots in the Alan Mayhew Trophy final on Saturday.

Rogers was captain when Chester Road reeled off three consecutive league titles from 2003 to 2005, and also guided the club to five County Cups and last season's Mayhew Trophy.
