AFC Telford not expecting Shaun Whalley back

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today admitted he's not expecting loan star Shaun Whalley to return to the New Bucks Head for next season.

The Luton Town winger was borrowed by the Bucks at the end of January and stayed until the end of the season, playing his part in the club's title success.

The 26-year-old scored the final goal of the campaign in the 3-0 victory at home to Gainsborough Trinity that made them Skrill Conference North champions.

He became the only player to win North and Conference Premier title-winning medals in one year, but is likely to try and force his way in at Kenilworth Road.

Luton's promotion back to the Football League may make it harder than ever to break through, but Watson feels it's only right that Whalley gives it his best shot.

The Telford boss said: "Shaun will be back at Luton in pre-season and we will see where he goes to. I don't think he will be available again, I think he will do well there.

"He owes to himself to give it a right good go there, work hard and try to get in the team. He's played in the Football League before, so he can do it.

"From our point of view, I don't want to be going into a season hanging on for someone which might not materialise. We need to get our own players."

Watson is backing Mike Phenix to take up the mantle left by Whalley, with talks continuing to keep the 25-year-old in Shropshire for a second season.

Despite ongoing health problems, the pacy wide man netted nine times during the campaign, becoming the Bucks' super-sub with seven from the bench.

He sat out the last three games of the season, as he battles the same stomach problem that sidelined Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher.

Watson said: "Shaun was available at a time when Mike Phenix was really suffering with his illness and I am backing him to take his place next season.

"Mike has got what you cry out for at any level, pace and power. At the moment, he needs to get his health sorted and he thinks he will be able to do that.

"You look at games like at home to Hednesford Town on New Year's Day - you saw the best of him there. Hopefully, he will kick on now."
