Shropshire Judo ace Danny Williams misses a medal
Shropshire Olympian Danny Williams has missed out on a medal at the British Judo Championships.
The Shrewsbury-born judoka, who represented Team GB at London 2012, was in action yesterday at the national championships in Sheffield.
Williams, who is now based in Camberley, competed in the men's under-73kg class at the English Institute of Sport.
But he was beaten to the podium by gold medal winner Alex Farbon from Budokwai-Pinewood, runner-up Patrick Dawson from Edinburgh and bronze medalist Jan Gosiewski from Team Bath.
In other action, Coventry's Paralympic silver medallist Sam Ingram, who is visually-impaired, achieved his ambition of winning a British Championship medal when he finished third in the men's under 90kg category.
Matthew Purssey captured his seventh British title at a fourth different weight by winning the category. Olympic silver medalist Gemma Gibbons picked up the first British Championship gold of her career.
Gibbons, one of the stars of London 2012 after her tearful medal, won all five of her contests at the English Institute of Sport, defeating Laura Dangerfield to win the final in just eight seconds.
She was not entirely happy with her performance, though, saying: "I didn't feel at my best, it was my first competition back so I wasn't at my sharpest.
"It's good to be back and this was my first senior British Championships win, which was very pleasing and was good preparation for returning to the international circuit."
