AFC Telford United defender Sean Newton has his sights set on helping England to international glory.

The 22-year-old left-back helped the national C team to a 1-0 win in Estonia on Tuesday, booking a place in the semi-finals of the International Challenge Trophy.

That has set up a home clash with either Belgium or Italy in the last four in February, with the winners facing a trip to Portugal in the final at the end of the season.

And a delighted Newton said: "It's a terrific experience. It was cold out in Estonia and there was a lot of wind but the facilities were excellent.

"Everything is done for you, all us players had to do was turn up for training and games."

Newton returned with a bruised foot picked up during the match and that made him a doubt for Telford's trip to Blue Square Bet North leaders Alfreton this afternoon.

The former Droylsden man was waiting for the swelling to go down before physios could assess the full extent of the damage.

Newton had been an ever-present for the Bucks before the England game forced him to miss Tuesday's FA Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Buxton.

And he revealed he learned of that shock result in a phonecall to car pool team-mates Shane Killock, Steve Abbott and Alex Meechan.

"I phoned all three of them and got no answer so I guessed it must have gone to extra-time," he said.

"I finally got hold of Steve and was speaking to all three of them on loudspeaker. I couldn't believe it when they told me what had happened."
