Captain Dale Rudrum masterminded last night's nervous 10 chalk win in the play-off against Tanners Shropshire League winners Pontesbury at British Sugar.

But, having had three years in job, Rudrum will now stand down due to growing family commitments.

"I have had three years in charge and that's it now. I'd like to thank the players for the great support they have given me.

"It's not very nice being in a play-off, but we have come through it," he said.

And, having done just that, Rudrum is clear about the way forward for Newport and his successor.

"Archibald Worthington survived a play-off in 2004 and they have since recruited players and got stronger.

"That's what we have to do - build on this win and improve."
