The Castlefields player took the trophy with a 21-16 win over local lad Richard Hargreaves in the final of the £3,750 tournament, which acts as a qualifier for the Champions of Champions event in Blackpool.

But it was his performance in the semi-final that drew most of the plaudits at Broughton Road in Skipton, as he defeated British No 1 Graeme Wilson 21-17 - a result which Wraight decribed as one of his best.

He said: "I have only played on the green a couple of times, so I don't really know it that well. But beating the British No 1 was great - it was a brilliant feeling.

"Winning the tournament now means I qualify for the Champion of Champions tournament in September."

Until his victory over Wilson, Wraight was not considered a clear favourite for the title - although he admitted the win over Wilson gave him a huge confidence boost ahead of the final.

"Until I came off after the semi-final, I had not thought about winning," Wraight said.

"But beating the best player in bowls in the semi-final meant I was the clear favourite in the final.

"I just kept on improving and managed to stay four of five points clear. It was a good day and I played really well."

He added: "I am very happy to win - it is an amazing feeling."

Wraight reached his semi-final clash with Graeme Wilson after beating Kevan Shaw 21-19 in the quarter-final.
