Simpson looks to take positive spin

Manager Paul Simpson has urged Shrewsbury Town to take confidence on their forthcoming League Two travels after a much-improved display on the road.

Town emerged with a 2-2 draw from last night's trip to Chesterfield, a result which took them back into the automatic promotion places until this afternoon's remaining League Two games.

It could have been even better with Shrewsbury leading 2-0 before a mistake from goalkeeper Glyn Garner gave the hosts a lifeline.

And, while Simpson was disappointed to see two points slip through there his team's grasp, he took real heart from the performance.

"We are disappointed and that maybe shows how well we played against probably the form team in the division," said Simpson.

"We had the game under control and the first goal is a killer - it's such a poor goal to give away.

"There is no way that ball should be going in the back of that net, I don't care what anybody says.

"But the players have worked their socks off. They were shattered but there were a lot of good things that we have to take forward and make sure we use them again

"We closed them down well and passed it nice and wide.

"We have to take confidence and make sure we push on."

Meanwhile, Garner was quick to hold his hands up for the error which allowed former Shrewsbury favourite Darren Currie to pull a goal back for Chesterfield, laying the platform for their recovery.

"We were 2-0 up and I made a mistake for the first goal and they got their tails up and got back into it," said the Welshman. "He hit it and I have got down early and it's swung back in. It's crept in and I'm gutted.

"I walked straight into the changing room and said 'sorry lads' and I will take the brunt of it there. I'm honest with myself.

"People remember that one. It's the life of a goalkeeper, you have to be thick-skinned and if you're not, there is no point doing it."

Defender Graham Coughlan, who was deputising as captain in the absence of Ben Davies, missed last night's game with a minor thigh problem.

He is likely to be absent for around a week, while fellow defender Mike Jackson took the skipper's armband last night.
