Three late goals against Chester, Cheltenham and Accrington Stanley in the last week have seen Symes' stock at Gay Meadow rise.

Peters has already placed the former Everton youngster on a contract until the end of the season and believes there is still more to come from the 23-year-old.

"Michael has got good ability and his goal-scoring record is excellent," he said.

"He has got nine goals in 13 starts and a few substitute appearances and we haven't had somebody score at that ratio while I have been here.

"But he is a work in progress because he has a lot of catching up to do having lost four years of his education to injury.

"Joe (Hinnigan, Town physio), goes out with him every day before training to do some special work to try and stop the injuries returning and he has a programme of exercises to do at home in the evening to strengthen the muscles.

"We just hope we can keep Michael fit and get the best out of him."

Meanwhile, Peters has revealed he will soon open talks with his out-of-contract players. Amongst the players whose deal expire at the end of the season are Dave Edwards, Kelvin Langmead, Ben Herd, Richard Hope and Neil Ashton.

And the Town boss said: "It's something I will be looking at over the next few weeks and just after Christmas.

"People who are out of contract are able to talk to other clubs from January so that's something we have to bare in mind.

"There is no threat with the players under 24 because we have seen from the likes of Jamie Tolley and Luke Rodgers that there is evidence they can't walk away for nothing."
