People campaigning against plans for a mini housing estate in Newport have vowed to fight their corner when they meet with developers.

Worried residents have formed a 'Save the Croft' pressure group to oppose Taylor Wimpey proposals for 34 new houses in Maynards Croft. And some of the group have been invited to meet Taylor Wimpey representatives at Newport Town Council's Guildhall headquarters on Monday between 4pm and 8pm.

Save the Croft co-ordinator Catherine Davies said the group would not compromise.

She said: "We would advise anyone planning to go not to go alone but to go in small groups. Save the Croft campaigners will not be drawn into discussions about alternative designs and so on.

"We will state clearly that we are opposed to the development in any form and will fight it with every means at our disposal. We would advise others to say the same."

The campaign group has created posters and has also launched a petition against the development. The proposed land is currently owned by three Maynards Croft residents who have agreed to sell should the scheme get the go-ahead. One house would have to be demolished for access.

A Taylor Wimpey spokesman said the firm wanted to keep communicating with residents.

He said: "We recently distributed an information leaflet and questionnaire inviting residents' opinions on our proposed development at Maynards Croft, Newport.

"Having provided feedback on the responses we received, and as part of an ongoing dialogue with immediate neighbours, we wanted to provide a further opportunity to engage with residents, this time on a personal basis."
