Ducati has announced that it is developing radar technology for its motorcycles which could be introduced as soon as 2020.

The Italian bike builder is looking to increase rider safety levels through the utilisation of sensors and radars, which would be able to identify vehicles in blind sports, or warn about traffic approaching from the rear at speed.

Called Advanced Rider Assistance Systems – or ARAS, for short – the technology has been in development since 2016, with Ducati working in partnership with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at the Politecnico di Milano University.

It comes following Ducati’s release of the only motorcycle in the world that is capable of interacting with an airbag jacket – the Multistrada 1200 D Air. It can deploy a jacket-mounted airbag in just 45 milliseconds – quicker than a standalone airbag system – protecting the rider from potentially life-threatening injuries in the event of a collision.
