Mercedes-Benz introduces six-cylinder diesel engine to X-Class pick-up range
German car maker’s ‘premium pick-up truck’ is now available with a more powerful diesel engine – and this time it’s the manufacturer’s own

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class pick-up truck’s new six-cylinder diesel engine is making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, providing performance worthy of the off-roader’s premium position in the market.
Since being introduced late last year, the brand’s newest commercial vehicle had only been available with a 2.3-litre, four-cylinder engine borrowed from Nissan, since the X-Class is built on the same platform as the Japanese manufacturer’s Navara pick-up.

However, buyers will soon be able to get a proper Mercedes engine under the bonnet. Badged as an X 350 d 4Matic, it’s a 3.0-litre unit that makes 255bhp and a hearty 550Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a permanent all-wheel-drive system that makes it formidable off road.
Low-range gearing is included too, as well as an optional rear locking differential to improve traction on slippery surfaces. Also of interest to those looking to take the X-Class on off-road excursions is the 222mm ground clearance, fording depth of 60cm and ability to conquer inclines of up to 50 degrees.
The engine is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission that Mercedes says doesn’t interrupt the flow of power to the wheels when changing gear – useful in low-grip conditions. Steering-wheel-mounted paddles are also fitted for manual control.
Provisional economy figures are 31.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 237g/km, while acceleration is decent for the truck segment, registering a 0-60mph time of 7.7 seconds.

In top-specification Power trim, the X-Class gets 18-inch alloy wheels, an underride protection plate beneath the front number, LED headlights and leather upholstery.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed for the X 350 d, but expect top-spec models to cost more than the £42,295 X 250 d that currently sits at the top of the range. Deliveries will begin mid-2018.
