Costa begin advertising for new jobs for Market Drayton branch

Plans by coffee giant Costa to open a new branch in Market Drayton have moved one step closer after the firm started advertising jobs to work in the store.

The coffee chain is still waiting to receive final planning permission from Shropshire Council to create a new store in Cheshire Street.

But it has already started advertising for jobs, including for the store manager.

The advert says the store manager could earn £17,750 to £19,000 annually, plus a 60 per cent bonus scheme and benefits.

The job specification says: "As store manager you'll consistently aim to get the best from your store, as well as your team.

"Leading by example, you'll be passionate about customer service, love great coffee and almost fanatical about driving your store forwards.

"Guiding and developing your team to serve the best in food and drinks, as store manager you'll also efficiently handle the administrative side of your business, including stock management, cost control and profit and loss accounts.

"We're looking for a proven manager, ideally from a hospitality or retail background, who really gets a buzz out of doing the best for their customers."

Costa says it hopes to open the coffee shop in late November, bringing up to 10 new jobs to the area.

A spokesman said: "As with all of our new store openings we will do all that we can to integrate ourselves with the local community, getting involved with events; providing the store as a meeting place and helping with fundraising."

The coffee chain, which will fill the vacant Stead & Simpson shop, has won the backing of Market Drayton Town Council.

But the scheme has been met with mixed reaction, with some concerned that it will take away business from independent traders.

Mark Whittle, chairman of Market Drayton Chamber of Trade and Commerce, described the firms' possible arrival as a blow to the town.

He thinks it will hit several businesses hard, including Per Cup Cafe, No21 and Jones's Coffee House.

But Councillor Roger Hughes described it as an "extremely positive" move.

If a Costa branch opens in Market Drayton it will add to those in Telford, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Oswestry.

Stead & Simpson, which is owned by Shoe Zone, was ousted by Shropshire Council earlier this year after operating there rent free for some time.

The council, which owns the premises, said Shoe Zone had requested a rent-freeze on the shop due to financial difficulties. This was granted until a new tenant was found who was willing to pay rent, which has now happened.
