The struggling bird was spotted in distress at Tee Lake in Shawbirch near Wellington a week ago and staff based at Cuan Wildlife Centre had been trying to reach her since then.

Following a call to the brigade on Sunday morning, a team managed to get to her at about 9.20am.

Anna Nicholas, of Much Wenlock's Cuan Wildlife Rescue Centre, said: "It was a combined and coordinated effort from ourselves and the fire service. We have been trying to rescue her for a week now, but she stays too far out in the boggy area for us to get her.

"She was beaten up by the resident pair on Tee Lake quite badly and was growing weaker by the day. If she had been there much longer she would have died.

"Green Watch from Wellington Fire Station were able to help us and their water first responders were able to wade into the water and drive her towards the bank where we were able to catch her. Without them it would have been impossible.

"She is now in our care, weak and very thin but expected to make a full recovery."
