Shropshire village housing development could get bigger

A Shropshire villages housing development, already described as placing “unacceptable strain on infrastructure”, could get even bigger if plans to add three extra homes are approved.

Last year, Shropshire Homes Ltd was granted permission to build 22 houses in Tibberton.

The company has now applied to add two bungalows and convert a detached home, already in the plans, into a pair of semis.

Telford and Wrekin planning officers recommend councillors accept the change, but the parish council is calling for the development to be halted, claiming the village’s water and road networks could be affected by it.

A report before the Telford and Wrekin Council planning committee describes Tibberton as a small agricultural village, approximately five miles west of Newport with a modest number of local services including a church, village hall, primary school, community-run shop and a public house.

It adds: “This full planning application effectively seeks to amend the previous planning approvals.

“Permission is currently being sought for the erection of a pair of detached bungalows and an additional affordable home.

“The latter element of the proposal requires the removal of a detached open-market dwelling and its replacement with a pair of semi-detached houses.”

One of those two semis will be designated as affordable housing, the authors note.

Tibberton and Cherrington Parish Council objects to the proposal.

The report authors write: “The parish council believes this increase is unacceptable and continue to have considerable concerns that recent developments, effectively increasing the size of the parish by over 50 per cent, have already placed unacceptable strain on the basic infrastructure of the village.

“Further development must stop, pending a serious review of the cumulative and overall effects this has had on Tibberton, in particular the water pressure, sewerage and drainage systems, and the road surface structure.”

Telford and Wrekin council's planning committee will consider the Shropshire Homes proposal when it meets on Wednesday.
